In this episode of Research Review we explore a 2020 study entitled “Reducing Mental Health Stigma Through Identification With Video Game Avatars With Mental Illness”. This study explores how playing an in-game character with mental illness can impact mental illness stigma through either playing or watching others play Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. The results of this study have wide ranging practical implications on our understanding of how media can contribute to, and potentially reduce, stigma related to mental health.
